Top ministry officials review draft National Agroecology Strategy for Food Systems Transformation
Sector Principal Secretaries and senior officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development convened on Tuesday in Nairobi to review and validate the draft National Agroecology Strategy for Food Transformation 2024-2033.
This is one of the final stages of the formulation of the Agroecology strategy which is set for launch late this year. The strategy seeks to put the country on an ecologically resilient and socially inclusive food system pathway. The Ministry estimates that the implementation of the 10-year strategy will cost about Kenya Shillings 30 billion.
WWF, through the Africa’s Food Future Initiative, has been supporting the strategy development process since its inception in September 2022 and has influenced the integration of aspects of agriculture impacts on the environment, emphasizing the need for land restoration, sustainable land use management, and management of food loss and waste.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development has collaborated with stakeholders through the Intersectoral Forum for Agroecology and Agrobiodiverity (ISFAA) to develop this strategy. ISFAA is a multistakeholder platform, bringing together state and non-state actors to advance ecologically responsive agriculture.
The strategy validation meeting was attended by representatives of Principal Secretaries for the Departments of Cooperatives, Irrigation, Agriculture and Research Development, Livestock, Fisheries and Blue Economy, and Public Health and Professional Standards.
Various state agencies and other key stakeholders also sent representatives, including the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization, Kenya Fisheries Institute, Pest Control Products Board, National Drought Management Authority, World Resources Institute, Participatory Ecological Land Use Management (PELUM) Association Kenya and the Council of Governors.
Before the launch of the Agroecology strategy, stakeholders have two weeks to submit their comments for consideration. The comments should be submitted by Tuesday, 8 October 2024, to the following addresses: directorpolicy2021@gmail.com, David Ombala at dombalo@yahoo.com and Robert Mbeche at robertmbeche@gmail.com.
