Maasai Olympics: Championing conservation through sports

The Maasai Olympics has become much more than just a competition, it is a powerful symbol of the intersection between culture and conservation. Hosted by Big Life Foundation in collaboration with WWF-Kenya and other key partners.

Held on 5 December 2024, the sports for conservation event brought together Maasai Morans from across the Amboseli Ecosystem to celebrate their heritage while embracing the importance of protecting Kenya’s wildlife for future generations.

Traditionally centred around lion hunting, a Maasai rite of passage, the event has evolved over time.

The Maasai Olympics now offers an alternative, where young warriors showcase their strength and skill through athletic events like races, spear throwing, and endurance challenges.

This modern twist on an ancient tradition sends a strong message: conservation is important for ensuring a sustainable future for people, nature and the economy.
