PELIS-The Best Practice of Forest Landscape Restoration in Kenya

Kenya's forest cover has been under significant strain with an estimated 103,368 hectares of deforestation occurring each year. To address this, the country aims to attain at least 10% and even more ambitious 30% forest cover by 2050. The Plantation Establishment and Livelihoods Improvement Scheme (PELIS) has been identified as the best practice in addressing deforestation and degradation in the Aberdares landscape.

The BENGO project in Kenya funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) started in 2020 as a Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) initiative implemented by WWF offices in Kenya, Tanzania, and Zambia with partner CSOs. The partners for the project in Kenya have been WWF-Kenya and National Alliance for Community Forest Association (NACOFA), responsible for FLR interventions in Naivasha landscape and contribution to AFR100 initiative in Kenya.
