Clean energy solutions powering communities
Sustainable energy holds the key to resolving the two major challenges of our time. Poverty and climate change.
Kenya is highly vulnerable to impacts of climate change, hence the need to reduce vulnerability and build resilience of people and nature to the current and anticipated effects of climate change while managing the uncertainties of the future.
Kenya is also considered energy-poor in terms of access to modern energy services, despite the availability of vast renewable energy resources.
While recent discoveries of oil and gas provides a great potential for economic growth, their exploration and production must adhere to international best practices in terms of environmental safeguards and benefit sharing.
We believe that investments in sustainable energy streams are vital to attaining Kenya’s Vision 2030 through promotion of access to reliable, cost-effective and sustainable energy as a climate change mitigation measure and a means to clean and healthy environment .
Climate change adaptation and mitigation must be mainstreamed in development programmes, strategies and action plans at all levels of government, so as to strategically Change climate change and deliver sustainable development.
At the national level we:
Played a key role in the development of Kenya’s Action Agenda and Investment Prospects documents, and further supported engagements in the development and review of Energy Policy and Bill, 2015; Climate Change Policy, 2016; National Adaptation Plan, 2015-2030; and is now involved in development of National Climate Change Action Plan, 2018-2022.
Spearheaded formation of Sustainable Energy Access Forum Kenya (SEAF-K), a multi-stakeholder platform for addressing the various challenges encountered in the sector, with membership from CSOs, INGOs, private sector, academia, and government agencies. WWF-Kenya is the current Secretariat for the forum.
Support clean energy innovations in partnership with the National Environment Trust Fund (NETFUND).
Engage in international climate finance dialogue as an Observer representing Africa at the Climate Investment Funds hosted by the World Bank.
Engagements in oil and gas sector, influencing various petroleum-related policies, reviews of Environmental Impact Assessment and Strategic Environmental Assessment guidelines, and assessing and monitoring the impact of oil and gas development on the local community as well as performance of oil exploration companies with respect to environmental safeguards.
At the landscape level (Coastal Kenya and Africa Rift Lakes regions) together we:Develop energy and climate change related policies e.g Kwale county Forest bill, Kajiado County Charcoal Regulations, and Bomet County Climate Change Policy.
Support civil society organisations capacity building and facillitate implement sustainable energy and climate change adaptation interventions.
Implementat clean energy initiatives to enhance energy access, promote forest conservation, mitigate human wildlife conflicts and improve livelihoods.
Facillitate conservation sensitisation campaigns in rural off-grid schools through training and installation of clean energy technologies to raise awareness on environmental conservation
Shine a light on climate action and power the shift to renewables
